2015 Elections: Obong of Calabar warns against “do or die” approach

The Obong of Calabar, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi-Otu V, has cautioned politicians against the “do or die” approach in the 2015 elections.

THe royal father’s caution was to prevent chaos in Nigeria’s democracy.

Speaking in Adiabo, Odukpani Local Government with journalists, the Efik traditional ruler said that from what he had seen from the just concluded primaries, he had doubts that the politicians showed any interest in the country or its citizens.

“The ambition and interest of many politicians seems to override the interest of the people they are supposed to serve.

“The political class has now made politics a do-or-die business. To them, once you sail through, you automatically become a millionaire.

In his opinion, if financial power was separated from political power, the freedom politicians have to mis-manage funds would diminish, and the interest of the general public will be magnified.

“Our democracy has deteriorated to the level that it is those at the corridors of power who decide who should take over political power, not on the basis of quality of service to the people.

“It has become an avenue to settle political acolytes. The people’s voices are no more important. This is very bad for our body polity.

“The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has taken steps to ensure credible elections, but politicians are not willing to play by the rules,” the traditional ruler stated.
