Akwa Ibom boils as Amaechi’s aide takes over NDDC

Elders from Eket in Akwa Ibom State have stage a protest over the appointment of Ibim Semenitari, as Acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NNDC, a close ally to former Rivers state governor and minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi.

The elders stated this on Thursday December 24, 2015 while condemning the appointment and described it as a mockery of the sustainable development of the Niger Delta and its people.

President Muhammadu Buhari on December 22, 2015 sacked Bassey Dan Abia, the former NDDC boss and was replaced with Seminitari, the former commissioner for information under Amaechi’s tenure.

One of the elders and former Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Essien Nduese, stated that Buhari erred in the appointment as Dan Abia’s replacement should have been from Abia state. Since he was appointed by former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2013 as the representative of Akwa Ibom.

Nduese added that Abia’s sack and replacement was illegal, adding that by bringing a politician to replace the head of a four-year statutory board which was barely two years old, has political undergone.

“We condemn in strong terms this barefaced slap on us; and as the largest producer of crude oil in Nigeria and having waited patiently as a state to take our turn in accordance with the statute of the NDDC Act, we believe justice demands that should a sack be warranted, then Abia should have been replaced by another indigene of the state.

“It amounts to complete illegality, bringing a politician to replace the head of a four-year statutory board which was barely two years old. Knowing President Muhammamdu Buhari for who he is, we are confident that he will not allow this injustice to Akwa Ibom State to prevail,”

Nduese on behalf of the elders also condemned what they called an attempt by the Federal Government to use its apparatus to remove Akwa Ibom State governor, Udom Emmanuel, through court process.

Adding that Emmanuel election was a mandate that had been freely given by majority of Akwa Ibom people, but for unexplained reasons had become subject of mischief’s of agent of the ruling APC in their desperate march to capture oil rich states of Akwa Ibom; Rivers, and Bayelsa, by force.

“We have watched with dismay but not helplessly, how our brothers whom we had supported from the other senatorial districts, at their shots to the governorship seat, had resorted to grandstanding in the thinking that justice and equity must be sacrificed now to the detriment of Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District,” he said.
