Buhari, APC Governors desperate to meet with Saraki, Dogara

All Progressives Congress, APC, governors have concluded plans for an “emergency meeting” to be held with the Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, on Thursday.

The aim of the meeting with the two heads of the apex lawmaking body in Nigeria, the National Assembly, is to try to reconcile warring factions in the party.

Recall that both Dogara and Saraki emerged as Speaker and Senate President respectively, against the wishes of the APC leadership.

The party had blessed Femi Gbajabiamila and Ahmad Lawan as its preferred candidates for the respective positions, but the duo lost out as the opposition and minority in the National Assembly, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, back their opponents.

Even after several attempts to smooth ruffled feathers, one of such attempts led by the National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Oyegun, the crises in the party has still continued to fester as the duo of Saraki and Dogara have still refused to tow party lines in the selection of Principal Officers.

Both Saraki and Dogara disregarded letters written to them by the party picking candidates for Principla Officers. Though the House was disrupted prior to the selections, the Senate’s was conducted with Ali Ndume and others not picked by the party, emerging.

Saraki and Dogara had both released separate statements giving reasons for their actions. Saraki claimed that he had received the letters of several APC caucuses prior to receiving the National Chairman’s letter, and the caucuses letters were in accordance with the extant laws of the Senate; while Dogara explained that reading the APC letter on the floor of the House was unconstitutional.

In what many are calling a “hail Mary,” the meeting slated for Thursday, was announced by the Governor of Imo State and Chairman of the Progressives governors, Rochas Okorocha, invited his colleagues for the meeting, which would hold at the Imo lodge, Asokoro, Abuja.

The meeting is scheduled to start at 8pm and the governors are expected to take a position ahead of the APC national executive committee, NEC, which will hold on Friday at 10am.

President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to attend the NEC. There is hope that Buhari, who is the defacto leader of the APC, would be able to finally put paid to the controversies surrounding the party.
