Buhari’s Certificate: Do the right thing – Northern Youths challenge

The Northern Youth Forum, NYF, has called on the All Progressives Congress, APC, and its presidential candidate Gen. Muhammadu Buhari to do what is required by presenting his certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The National President of the forum, Engineer Bello Gambo Bich, made this known in a press statement signed in Kano and made available to THISDAY on Saturday.

The statement reads in part: “…General Buhari should do what is required of him by presenting his certificates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as other presidential candidates have done, instead of hiding behind the fig leaf of constitutionalism,

‘’It is true that the relevant section 131(d) of the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria does not require Buhari to physically present his certificates but to only show that he ‘has been educated up to at least secondary school level or its equivalent.”

He added, “It is clear that the spirit of that provision demands that he should present certified true copies of his original certificates because that is the only way that INEC will determine that he has been educated up to secondary school level.’’

While dismissing Buhari’s claim that the original copies of his certificates were with the military authorities, the group reminded him that such a claim was not enough to fulfill the constitutional requirement.

Buhari had earlier claimed that his credentials were carted away by soldiers who invaded his residence during the Babangida coup that ousted him from office.

Babangida immediately refuted the allegation, saying nobody went after any certificates but after men during the coup.
