EDITOR’S DESK: Why PDP MUST Handover Its 2019 Presidential Ticket To Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Over Any Other Aspirant, By Salisu Abdulai

As the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Presidential primaries fast approaches, and the 2019 Presidential election, early next year, the pressure is on as to who is going to emerge as the much awaited PDP Presidential Candidate, to battle and possibly defeat President Muhammadu Buhari, of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Among the numerous Presidential Aspirants under the PDP, looking to emerge victorious at the party’s primaries, two political heavyweights have stood out from the bunch. They are former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, and Senate President, Bukola Saraki.

For a while, Atiku Abubakar was leading the poll, and was widely seen as the next President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, but not until recently, when the Ronaldo of Nigerian Politics (Saraki), as he is now fondly called, showed his interest in the Presidential race, made a public declaration, and then obtained the necessary nomination forms, did things begin to take another dimension in the Nigerian political terrain.

Yes, Atiku is a Businessman, who has gone further to create a lot of employment, and continues to work with the youths of Nigeria, up till date. However, I dare to say that this is not enough to wrestle power from the hands of the incumbent APC Government, who has proven again and again, their desperation to hold on to power at all possible cost. I say this because, no matter how brilliant you are, or how much development and goodwill you intend to bring to this country, if you cannot wrestle power from the government in the first place, then all your goodwill and great ideas are as good as useless.

The man we all know as Bukola Saraki, has been a major name in this administration, be it for good or bad reasons. Right from 2015, when the President Muhammadu Buhari administration was sown-in to power, up till 2018, it has been Bukola Saraki for one thing or the other. As someone once said: “If a man could defect with all the National Assembly Members from Kwara, the State Governor, with the entire EXCO, and all the Members of the House of Assembly, except one, then there is something unique about this man.”

Bukola Saraki has fought many battles with the Buhari-led Federal Government, right from 2015; starting from emerging as the Senate President, against the wishes of his party members, as they claimed; the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, fiasco that quickly followed, for false declaration of his assets; the Offa Banks robbery incident brought against him by the Nigerian Police, which many have speculated was all arranged, allegedly; back to the power tussle at the Senate, before and after his defection from the APC to the PDP; with the many attempts to effect his impeachment as Senate President.

There is one thing common with all these events that have taken place from 2015 till date, which have involved Bukola Saraki, and that is the fact that for every battle Bukola Saraki has had to fight with the Buhari Federal Government and the APC as a whole, he has EMERGED VICTORIOUS!!!

This in turn earned him the well deserved title, as the Ronaldo of Nigerian Politics. Saraki has outsmarted this very well calculated and desperate APC government at all times, with no single loss recorded; and that has scored him some very great political points in the minds of Nigerians and even International Political Observers; and I do not think the PDP Leadership should ignore this very important fact, as they go into their Presidential primaries.

I cannot recall any recent battles Atiku has had with the APC Government under Buhari, that he emerged victorious.

It is going to be a tough race to who emerges as the next Nigerian President, come 2019, but I think PDP should play it very smart, go for the man that has proven himself in the most recent times, the only man that has outsmarted this government again and again, go for Bukola Saraki, give him the PDP’s 2019 Presidential ticket.
