External Sabotage: Saudi Arabia blocks Nigerian arms meant for anti-insurgency fight

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has refused to grant flight permits to cargo planes carrying military equipment and armored tanks procured by the Nigerian Government from Pakistan.

ThisdayLive reports that the refusal to grant flight permits by Saudi authorities was going to cause a diplomatic row, because it comes at a time when President Goodluck Jonathan was determined to end insurgency in the North-east.

The reports reveal that the President had earlier given a green light to Nigerian military authorities to procure arms from alternative sources such as Pakistan and Russia, rather than the traditional Nigerian allies led by the United States of America, United Kingdom and France.

It can be recalled that Nigeria had expressed displeasure with the US after the country blocked all efforts made to procure American manufactured cobra attack helicopters from Israel.

With this stand from the Western Countries, Nigeria decided to seek alternative sources in the East, mainly Pakistan, from which the Federal government was able to purchase large military hardware needed to end the war against insurgency.
