Mass Jubilation As Sports Minister Gets Arrested And Detained Over Bribery Scandal

A former Chinese Deputy Sports Minister, Xiao Tian, has been sentenced to jail by a court in Central China, after finding him guilty of bribery.

The Deputy Sports Minister, once sat on China’s Olympic Committee for ten and a half years. He was put under investigation for suspected corruption last year.

The court in Nanyang, in Henan province, said that Xiao had taken 7.96 million yuan ($1.15 million) in bribes, between 1997 and 2014, when he held various official sports positions, in exchange for help with promotions, building projects, and holding of sports events.

According to report, China is aggressively seeking to stamp out graft in Communist Party and government ranks, while also seeking to eject corrupt elements from its sports establishment, particularly in soccer, which has been hit by match-fixing scandals.
