#NGGuberPolls2015: You must cancel the election – Soyinka

Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has called for the cancellation of elections at various polling units across the Federation where electoral materials are said to be missing and has said that ignoring such actions is not healthy to our electoral process.

Soyinka who said this during the “States’ Election” programme on Channels Television on Saturday, maintained that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, should be given a pass mark for fostering a level playing ground for all political Parties to compete favourably.

According to him, “in centres where voting documents are missing, the voting at such centres should be cancelled.”

He called on INEC to out rightly cancel elections where rigging occurs.

“INEC has done creditably well, but should make examples of individuals by cancelling elections where rigging occurs,’’ Soyinka noted.

Soyinka condemned the actions of desperate politicians who jettison their sense of responsibility by throwing the nation into chaos because of their selfish ambitions, and appealed to the ‘’greedy shylocks” to allow democracy to thrive.

On the assessment of Nigeria’s democracy in general, Soyinka stated that democracy in Nigeria was below the pass mark.

“Nigeria’s democracy is below 40 per cent because we lack strong democratic institutions, which are epileptic in enforcing laws and orders.

“A typical example can be seen in Ekiti where Fayose of a man shut down the state parliament for a year, all in the name that 7 is greater than 19,’’ he stated.

He called on the incoming government to set its priority right by tackling insecurity, unemployment and power.
