PDP floors APC’s lead as INEC upholds election in Rivers State

Just before the announcement of the collated result for Rivers State by the returning Officer of the state, Professor John Etu-Efeorto, the INEC Chairman made it known that a petition was sent to the commission from APC on Sunday.

The chairman Prof. Attahiru Jega said the petition asked for the annulment of the Rivers State result due to irregularities: “Sunday morning, I received a petition from APCNigeria demanding for the cancellation and rescheduling of elections” Jega stated.

The allegations claimed that Elections did not hold in the State, saying no polling unit within the State had result sheets, and there were cases of substitution of INEC Adhoc staff.

“There were a number of points as to why the Commission should cancel or reschedule elections: 1)No elections 2)No result sheets 3)Substitution of officials”.

He made it known that it was not possible to cancel elections without any established fact, and therefore circulated a memo in the commission and sent out a three man committee to investigate the claim in the State.

“I circulated this memo to the Commission; We reviewed it and set-up a 3 man Committee to Rivers and the committee returned this morning with their observations”.

“We cannot establish any cancellation or substitution of results and we sent a list of collation officers to the state,” the INEC boss noted.

Speaking on reasons for the replacement, he stated that if Adhoc staffs fail to show up at their primary assignment the commission have the power to replace them with other resources available: “Officials fail to show up to work for several reasons and it is up to the REC to substitute from the pool of officials they have” he concluded.

Collation has gone on recess, with the announcement of the Rivers State results.

APC polled 69, 238 while the PDP polled 1, 487, 075.

Collation will resume in 30 minutes Jega said.
