Peter Obi knocks Fashola off perch

Peter Obi, on Monday replied Governor Babatunde Fashola, on a piece he wrote titled “Presidential Declarations: My Take Away,” published on ThisDay last week Monday, 12 January 2015.

Fashola had said that President Goodluck Jonathan had failed to inspire hope at his inaugural campaign rally, arguing that he failed to mention any security plans in his speech.

He also made some accusations, concluding that the President has not fulfilled his promises to Nigerians.

Obi, who is the former Governor of Anambra State and Chairman, South, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Presidential Campaign Organisation, in his reply, countered Fashola by pointing out that the President actually told Nigerians what he had achieved so far in office.

He explained that the president emphasized how he strengthened anti-corruption institutions like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC, in addition to his resolve to follow due process of the law at all times.

He also said that the Jonathan regime had reduced the militancy in the Niger Delta and kidnapping in the East. He asked that if the All Progressives Party, APC, has some insight on stopping the current insurgency, as they claim to have, why wait till they get elected and keep letting innocents die.

He questioned why there has been no remark from their candidate regarding his adoption by Boko Haram as their candidate.

He countered Fashola’s accusation about misappropriated funds, categorically stating SURE-P monies have also not been used for politics. He said the money was used for infrastructural development in several states of which Lagos was included. He said the President used his campaign speech to point out how the sound economic policies of his government have brought about macro-economic stability, a fact acknowledged by the renowned economist and former Chairman of the Asset Management Division of Goldman Sachs Group, Dr. Jim O’Neill, who coined the term BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) and MINT (Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria and Turkey).

Obi also pointed out several achievements under the Jonathan administration like the resuscitation of auto companies such as Peugeot Assembly of Nigeria, PAN, and ANNAMCO and new ones also came up such as INNOSON Motor Manufacturing Company, Nnewi and NISSAN and they are doing very well; creation of over 22, 000 jobs under YouWin; the turnaround in the agricultural and other sectors; remodeling of several airports and construction of five new terminals simultaneously in Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt, Kano and Enugu.

He finally debunked Fashola’s accusation that the PDP Convention held in Lagos caused chaos in the state, stating that the party “conducted its campaign in a most responsible manner.

Traffic control was near excellent, because the president insisted that no citizen should suffer because he was in town. Instead, the APC primary was an exemplary display of disorder, in terms of traffic control and coordination of activities connected with the event.”

He said voting Jonathan again will lead to an unprecedented growth and development, as he is the most experienced candidate in the race.
