Political Tsunami Hits Aso Rock, As Buhari Fires 5 Aides, Makes Immediate Replacement
President Muhammadu Buhari, on Monday, January 9, sacked Heads of parastatals in the Ministry of Aviation, including the Acting Managing Director, Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, NAMA; Director-General, Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NIMET; Rector, Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, NCAT; Commissioner, Accident Investigation Bureau, AIB; and Chairman, Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, FRCN.
The President immediately approved the appointments of Captain Fola C. Akinkuotu, as Managing Director, NAMA; Professor Sani Abubakar Mashi, Director-General, NIMET; Captain Abdulsalam Mohammed, Rector, NCAT; Engr. Akinola Olateru, Commissioner, AIB; and Adedotun Sulaiman, as Chairman FRCN.
In a statement from the office of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation, Sabiu Zakari for the Minister of State (Aviation), Senator Hadi Sirika, said the sacks were with immediate effect, while the appointments of the new heads, also take immediate effect.
In the statement, Zakari described the incoming NAMA boss, Captain Akinkuotu, as a seasoned Transport Pilot, Flight and Aircraft Maintenance Engineer, Airline Chief Executive, and a trained Aviation Industry Regulator. He was also a former Director General of the NCAA.
While he said Professor Abubakar Mashi, Director-General, NIMET, a Professor of Geography, with specialty in Environmental Application of Remote Sensing, is currently a Deputy Vice Chancellor, at the University of Abuja.
For the FRCN, Buhari’s statement through his Spokesman, Garba Shehu reads: “President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the immediate removal and the replacement of the Executive Secretary, and the reconstitution of the Board of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, FRN. He has appointed a Chairman, and a new Executive Secretary for the Council.
“The new Council as approved by the President, has Adedotun Sulaiman, MFR, as Chairman.
Mr. Sulaiman, was a former Managing Partner/Director of Arthur Anderson, and later Accenture. He is a Chartered Accountant, and a product of the University of Lagos, and Harvard Business School.
“The President has also approved the appointment of Daniel Asapokhai, as the Executive Secretary of the Council.
“Mr. Asapokhai is a partner, and a Financial Reporting Specialist, at the PriceWaterHouseCoopers, PWC, Nigeria.
“He is a product of the University of Lagos, and the University of Pretoria.
“President Muhammadu Buhari, has also instructed the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, to invite the nineteen ministries, departments and agencies of the Federal Government, and private sector organizations specified in the FRC Act, to nominate Members of the Board of the Council”.
