President Jonathan’s confidant, Oronto Douglas passes on at 49

The Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Research, Documentation and Strategy, Oronto Douglas, has died.

According to a source from the presidency, Douglas passed on at the State House clinic in Abuja at 4:58 a.m. Thursday.

The real cause of his death is unknown at this time, but the Presidential adviser is said to have managed a terminal illness for some time, and had, from time to time, sought treatment abroad for prolonged periods.

Douglas, also a close confidant of the President, was said to have been shattered by Jonathan’s loss at the March 28 presidential elections.

He is remembered for his efforts at representing the Niger Delta in environmental activism fights as well as the late Ken Saro Wiwa during the General Sani Abacha regime.

He is survived by a wife and children.
