Reps committee reschedules meeting as Jega falls ill

A meeting between the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters and the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, was suddenly called off on Friday after the INEC Boss fell ill.

This was revealed by the committee, chaired by Mr. Jerry Manwe, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, lawmaker from Taraba State.

The scheduled meeting was to discuss preparation by INEC to conduct next month’s general elections. The committee said “The purpose of the meeting is to underscore the current burning issues on 2015 general elections and to proffer necessary solutions,”

The committee noted that issues to be discussed include security, level of funding for INEC and how internally displaced persons would vote during the election

“Funding and security will play a role in the credibility of the poll. So, we will have to look at all these issues with the INEC chairman,” Manwe had said.

The meeting was originally scheduled for January 20, 2015, but on Thursday, the committee rescheduled it for Friday (yesterday). Few hours after the meeting (on Thursday), the committee’s clerk, Mr. Oscar Okoro, announced again that it had again been called off.

Meanwhile, the committee said that the postponement was due to Jega’s ill-health, adding that the INEC boss had requested that he would be available when he regained his health.
