Shock as APC dumps Sylva for Dickson

The All Progressives Congress, APC, has subtly deserted the Party’s governorship candidate in the just concluded Bayelsa polls, Timipre Sylva, by congratulating the Bayelsa state Governor-elect, Seriake Dickson, over his hard won victory.

Addressing newsmen at Abuja the Party’s Deputy Publicity Secretary, Comrade Timi Frank, said he had forewarned his party that if urgent measures were not taken, the party would suffer defeat and it did.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, had declared Dickson of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, winner of the Bayelsa polls, after scoring a total of 134,998 votes to beat Sylva, who scored 86,852 votes.

The decision of the APC stands at variance with its candidate Sylva, who had sworn never to accept the election results, alleging that local representatives of INEC and the PDP connived to rig the election in favour of Dickson.

Sylva maintained that the election should have been declared inconclusive given that 53,000 votes were still outstanding as cancelled votes.

However, Dickson has thanked Bayelsans for his re-election, but said there would be no celebration because of the number of lives that had been lost.

He added that since the election had been won and lost, the needs of Bayelsans and the challenge of improving their material conditions had become more urgent.

Speaking further, Timi Frank said: “Times without number I have said it that the Bayelsa APC has issues. Issues that were not attended to and I have been shouting a long time ago that if we do not resolve our issues and we go into this election, we will lose Bayelsa, but nobody listened to me.

“I cried and spoke to some of our leaders about the issue and importance of reconciliation, but the man in question and former governor of Bayelsa, Timi Priye Sylva, who was also our candidate, failed to listen, thinking he could do it all alone but this is the result.

“He thought he could do all alone and I made it clear to Nigerians when I granted interview that with Sylva, we would lose the election and i still stand on that position and the results have played out.”

While congratulating President Muhammadu Buhari for creating the enabling environment for free and fair elections in the state which led to Dickson’s victory, Frank advised the PDP to learn from the APC by accepting defeat in future elections.

“let me use this medium to congratulate President Muhammadu Buhari, Governor Seriake Dickson and the PDP.

“This is not a victory for them alone but for the entire Bayelsans. Through the current president, Bayelsa has been able to enjoy free and fair elections through a proper democratic process of electing their choice.

“Let me sound this as a warning, in future elections, if PDP happens to lose, they should be able to accept defeat. They should not point accusing fingers at the president or the APC by crying foul that the Party has rigged the election.

“What has happened is a clear testament to the fact that APC is not a desperate party and can accommodate people to vote the person of their choice”

As at press time, Buhari has not congratulated Dickson for winning the January 9, 2016 Bayelsa election.
