The Sokoto State Government approved N927.6m on 7,000 physically challenged persons and other indigenes across the state.

The Sokoto Zakat Committee on Monday, through the Chairman of the committee, Alhaji Lawal Maidoki told NAN that the money was spent on about 7,000 physically challenged persons as instructed by the State Government.

Lawal Maidoki said N549.6m out of the amount allocated was used in paying monthly allowances to physically challenged persons in the 23 local governments of the state.

“There are about 7,000 physically-challenged persons benefiting from the state government’s gesture, and they are each being given N6, 500 monthly.

“The gesture is to alleviate their suffering and reduce the menace of street begging across the state,” he explained.

He however added that the remaining N378m was used to tackle issues like unemployment, poverty, mentally deranged persons, less privileged, women and elderly and also those that one way or the other have been affected by natural calamities in the state.
