What Amaechi, Soyinka did not tell Nigerians

Caught in the web of N82 million scandal, Former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi and Professor Wole Soyinka have issued Press statements distancing themselves from the allegations made by the Rivers State government, but however, insisted that they would not explain to Nigerians the exact amount spent on the Nobel laureates birthday dinner.

The Rivers State Commissioner for Information, Austin Tam-George, had on Wednesday January 6, 2016 demanded for a refund of N82 million spent by Amaechi to host Soyinka’s 80th birthday dinner which held in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

“I will seek the permission of the Governor to formally write Professor Wole Soyinka, a known supporter of Amaechi, if he received part of the N82 million spent on a 3-hour Dinner hosted for him by the Amaechi administration,” the commissioner had stated.

This is aside alleged reports that the former governor left several months of unpaid salaries and pensions, as well as abandoned projects, despite receiving almost N3 trillion throughout his tenure.

In a swift reaction, Amaechi’s Media Office has accused Governor Nyesom Wike’s administration of spreading lies, criminalizing legitimate transactions of government and doing everything to smear the former Governor.

“Wike must stop these silly distractions. Rivers people are not interested in his lies and witch-hunt. Rather, Rivers people want to know what will happen to their children that he stopped and cancelled the funding of their scholarships abroad.

“Rivers people want to know why the Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency (RSSDA), an agency setup by law is no longer functioning under Wike? Why instead of quality education, a standard set by his predecessor, under Wike, grasses and weeds have taken over the beautiful schools built by Amaechi?” the statement read.

It added that since Wike is blind to his responsibilities as Governor of Rivers State and has insisted on attacking the person and clean reputation of Amaechi as his one and only project, then let him go to court to prove his allegations and stop the nefarious insinuations against Amaechi.
